HASTA LA RAIZ
DIRECTED STUDY SHOW “TRANSCENDENT MOMENTS” 2023
This body of work explores the themes and relationships behind historical and collective trauma, modern-day resistance, and traditions within Colombian history and culture. To invoke this contrast between the past and present, I referenced various works of Latino art of the colonial era, indigenous mythology, post-colonial folklore, oil, and digital painting. It explores how the history of colonialism still impacts the country today, how culture gets passed down generationally, and the neo-colonial violence of capitalism.
Y Por Más Que Crezcas, Vas A Estar Aquí
30x18 IN OIL ON WOOD PANEL
This work demonstrates how colonialism impacted how culture has been passed down through the generations of women that were erased by the misogynistic customs of the Catholic Church. Despite these customs having changed from pre-colonial times, remnants of Indigenous and African culture still exist within Colombians that are directly disconnected from their ancestry due to the stigmatization of non-European traditions within families. This work acknowledges this heritage and showcases how culture is continued through folkloric dance, clothing, mythology, storytelling, art, and religious syncretism.
Aqui Se Respira Lucha
30 X 18 IN OIL AND DIGITAL PRINT ON WOOD PANEL
This work looks at the way that colonialism’s legacy has been passed down and continues to harm people in Colombia with many US corporations paying to destabilize the country in order to access resources. This continues generational trauma since US interventions have been happening for decades, causing several civil wars, displacing millions, and killing hundreds of thousands. In contrast, I wanted to showcase the ways in which the people that have been harmed or generations continue to protest and resist the violence.
YO TE LLEvo adentro
30 X 18 IN DIGITAL PAINTING ON MATTE PAPER
This third piece encompasses many multicultural aspects of Colombia and pays homage to the folklore that has been passed down.
Many of the aspects of folklore in Colombia come from indigenous myths, indigenous communities, stories from afro-colombian communities, music and clothing that has blended Indigenous, African, and European influences, and the nature and biodiversity of the country.
